Message from the Chief
On behalf of the dedicated men and women of the Kings County Probation Department, it is my pleasure to welcome you to our department’s website. As Chief it is my distinct pleasure to lead a staff of approximately 130 law enforcement professionals who strive daily to ensure Kings County is a safe and welcoming place to live, work and raise a family.
Our mission is to protect the community we serve through enforcement of probation conditions, the use of risk/needs assessments and the treatment and supervision of adult and juvenile offenders. The department also provides intervention services for at-risk youth, including teaching evidence based programs in local schools to meet the needs of this population. Our officers act as investigative officers of the Kings County Superior Courts and provide pre-sentence reports as well as recommendations and evaluations. We work in partnership with local, state and federal criminal justice agencies to keep our community safe.
Kings County Probation also provides mandated custodial services for youth in the Kings Juvenile Center. Juvenile Correctional Officers at the Kings Juvenile Center are responsible for the housing and supervision of youth who are either detained while pending court proceedings or those youth adjudicated by the court and are serving a commitment.
We seek to maintain a balance between the enforcement of laws and court orders with the treatment of the root causes of delinquency and criminality. We understand that rehabilitation and accountability are not mutually exclusive. Probation’s role in community corrections has expanded in recent years and will continue to do so. We will continue to seek out proven methods of assisting our probationers with effecting change so that they can be a productive member of our community.
This is a remarkable agency filled with dedicated and talented officers and staff that work daily to meet and exceed our goals and mission.
No matter your reason for visiting this website, be it for specific information, to learn more about probation in general or if you are interested in becoming a member of our team…I welcome you.
Kelly M. Zuniga
Chief Probation Officer
