Household Hazardous Wastes

Many products found in your home, because of their chemical nature, are potentially hazardous substances. When discarded, they are considered household hazardous waste. It is illegal to dispose of household hazardous waste in the trash, down storm drains, or onto the ground.

Many common household products are considered household hazardous waste when they are discarded. The following are examples of these products:

Hazardous Products
  • Adhesives
  • Latex and oil-based paints
  • Paint thinners and strippers
  • Grease and rust solvents
  • Wood and metal cleaners
  • Nail polish and removers
  • Cosmetics
  • Household polishes and cleaners
  • Antifreeze
  • Oven cleaners
  • Drain openers
  • Lighter fluids
  • Insecticides, herbicides, and rat poisons
  • Fungicides and wood preservatives
  • Used oil and oil filters
  • Fuel injection and carburetor cleaners
  • Batteries

In order to keep household hazardous wastes out of the municipal waste stream and promote proper disposal of hazardous wastes, the Kings Waste & Recycling Authority maintains a permanent Household Hazardous Waste facility adjacent to the Materials Recovery Facility at 7803 Hanford-Armona Road in Hanford. Free household hazardous waste disposal services are available to residents of Kings County on the first Saturday of every month from 9AM to 2PM. In addition, the Authority also sponsors temporary household hazardous waste collection events at various locations in the county on the first Saturday of alternate months. Announcements of the location and time of these temporary collection events are published in local newspapers prior to each event. Please adhere to the following guidelines when bringing household hazardous wastes to the permanent facility or temporary locations:

  1. Please make sure products are in the original container, sealed, labeled and not leaking.
  2. Do not mix products.
  3. Limit your load to 5 gallons or 50 pounds per visit.
  4. Do not bring Compressed gas cylinders, radioactive materials, explosives, metallic mercury, infectious wastes, or commercial wastes.
